In April, the Foundation participated in the inaugural World Development Forum, co-organized by Harvard University and Columbia University. The event brought together officials, scholars and youth representatives from various countries.

The 50,000 in Five Years Initiative

The Foundation launched CUSEF Next Gen Initiative, an exchange program aimed at fostering connections between Chinese and American students. The initiative aligns with China's plan to host 50,000 young Americans in the next five years.
In January, the students are invited to the reception commemorating the 45th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relations.

As part of the celebrations for its 15th Anniversary, the Foundation launched CUSEF 15, a series of high-end dialogues.

Investing in Youth Leadership

The Foundation and One Young World announced the establishment of the CUSEF x One Young World Scholarship in October, selecting youth leaders worldwide based on their proven positive social impact in tackling global challenges such as climate change, gender equality and education.

Supporting Philadelphia Orchestra’s China Trip

In November, the Foundation sponsored the Philadelphia Orchestra's trip to China for a concert marking the 50th Anniversary of the ensemble’s historic 1973 tour of China, the first by an American orchestra.

Commemorating the Shanghai Communique Anniversary

February marked the 50th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique with a joint concert in Shanghai organized by the Foundation, CPAFFC, and Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.
Chinese and U.S. artists collaborate both online and offline as they perform classic music works from both countries.
Adapting to Global Changes

In spite of pandemic challenges, the Foundation successfully transitioned to digital engagement, facilitating over 20 online dialogues between the two countries, including the Political Party Leaders Dialogue, the Pacific Community Initiative, and the annual Hong Kong Forum on U.S.-China Relations.

Supporting the Youth Dialogue

In October, the Foundation supported the Sino-American Youth Dialogue on Climate Change, co-organized by Tsinghua University and MIT, which contributed to the discussions at COP26 in Glasgow.

Pacific Community Initiative Report Released

The Foundation supported the Pacific Community Initiative research report The United States and China in Asia: Mitigating Tensions and Enhancing Cooperation, co-released by the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and the Institute of International and Strategic Studies at Peking University.

In December, the Foundation organized a trip to Beijing and Chongqing for a delegation of HBCU presidents. The purpose of this visit was to explore opportunities for collaboration with Chinese universities.

The Foundation continued its tradition of bipartisan engagement by organizing a China tour in August for U.S. officials from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Pioneering Technology Cooperation

The Foundation facilitated a joint research program between the Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft Initiative and the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations focused on the Internet of Things (IoT). This program aims to enhance bilateral cooperation in addressing the challenges arising from IoT development while pursing shared objectives of safeguarding consumer safety and national security.

In October, the Foundation announced CUSEF participation in the Pacific Community Initiative at the founding ceremony of Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Advancing Climate Partnership

Following the groundbreaking climate agreement signed by China and the United States at the end of 2014, the Foundation initiated several projects to foster bilateral cooperation in this critical area. In 2015 and 2016, a team of climate change experts from the Center for American Progress visited China for discussions with their Chinese counterparts.

In May, the Foundation launched its first China-U.S. Forum at the University of Chicago in partnership with the university and the Paulson Institute.

In collaboration with the Center for American Progress, the Foundation released a joint report titled “China-U.S. Relations: Toward a New Type of Major Power Relations.” In September, the Foundation partnered with the Carter Center to host the Seminar on Building a New Type of Major Country Relations between China and the United States.

The Foundation participated in the “100,000 Strong” initiative and facilitated Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong’s presentation of scholarships to students from historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) in November. Every year, the Foundation organizes more than a dozen groups of U.S. students to visit China.

Fostering Economic Research

The Foundation convened leading economists, entrepreneurs, and former officials from both nations for a joint project titled “Prospects for the U.S.-China Economic Cooperation in the Next Decade” to analyze bilateral economic relations and develop strategic recommendations for the coming decade.

The 40th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique coincided with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping’s February U.S. visit, during which Chairman Tung Chee-hwa attended the reception in honor of Xi and the Chinese leader’s meeting with former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and Madeleine Albright, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and other retired U.S. political figures.

August marked an important milestone with the Foundation’s first U.S. student exchange program, bringing African-American high school students from Los Angeles to Beijing and Shanghai.

The Foundation fostered comprehensive bilateral dialogue spanning political parties and covering security, China-U.S. relations, rule of law, and the international economic order. A milestone achievement came in September with the inaugural China-U.S. High-Level Dialogue in Beijing, organized jointly with the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs and the Center for American Progress.

In August, during the Beijing Olympic Games, the Foundation hosted a reception and dinner at the Forbidden City to celebrate the international sporting event and the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations. Initiating State Government Exchange
2008
In partnership with the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), the Foundation introduced a China tour program for U.S. state legislative leaders and lieutenant governors. Five lieutenant governors participated in 2008, with the program expanding to include seven lieutenant governors and legislative presiding officers from six southern states in 2009.

Launching the Sanya Initiative
2008
The Foundation initiated a groundbreaking dialogue in February between retired senior generals from China and the United States in Sanya, Hainan Province. This annual dialogue, known as the Sanya Initiative, cultivates unofficial military-to-military relationships. The second session expanded to multiple U.S. locations, including Hawaii, Washington and New York in November 2009.

From Vision to Reality
2008
In January, the China-United States Exchange Foundation was established in Hong Kong as an independent, nonprofit and nongovernmental organization. Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, who served as the first chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, took the helm as chairman.
